The reading
A romantic-holdout ballad from 1971 that Kanye West later rebuilt into a messy, half-apologetic love song about settling down without quite meaning it

Bound 2: A 1971 Love Loop Rewired Into Kanye's Reluctant Vow
The lyrics printed under this title are not the Ponderosa Twins Plus One original in full; they are Kanye West's Bound 2 (2013), which loops the group's 1971 refrain 'Bound to fall in love' as its emotional spine. Any interpretation has to hold both songs at once: a Cleveland teen-soul group promising devotion, and a rapper four decades later using that promise as a life raft.
The hook is the whole thesis. 'Bound to fall in love,' repeated with a falsetto sigh and the countersign 'Uh-huh, honey,' is a surrender phrased as fate. In the 1971 reading it is puppy-love certainty. In the 2013 reading it is something closer to resignation, and the tension between those two tones is what gives the track its strange warmth.
The opening boast
Before any tenderness arrives, the narrator clears the field. Other men are dismissed as 'lame'; a 'real' partner is someone you 'drown' in. It is a possessive frame, and it sets up the joke of the rest of the song, which is that this same swaggering narrator is about to spend three minutes admitting he barely knows how to do this.
Verse one: the club, the reputation
The first verse is a scene and a confession folded together. He notices a woman out on a Thursday, ostensibly for a friend's birthday, ordering champagne but still looking 'thirsty,' wearing Forever 21 at thirty. The detail is affectionate rather than cruel; he is describing someone trying, the way he is trying. Then he inventories his own reputation in a run of internal rhymes: mad, sad, Brad (a Fight Club nod), each one an admission dressed as swagger. The 'prom shit / red cup, on the lawn shit' passage reaches for a suburban-American teenage image, as if the narrator wants a do-over of a courtship he never had.
The pivot: 'tired of loving, with nobody to love'
The bridge, sung in the Ponderosa Twins' sampled voice, is the emotional hinge. It reframes everything around it. The boasting and the vulgarity are what someone does when they are, in the song's own words, tired of loving with no one to love. The follow-up line, 'one good girl is worth a thousand bitches,' is the crudest possible way to say fidelity is worth it, and the song seems to know that.
Verse two: apology as punchline
The second verse is where the song's contradictions get loud. A graphic sexual boast is immediately punctured by a cartoon voice ('what would Jeromey Romey Romey Rome think?'), a callback to the Ponderosa Twins member Jerome and to a persona from Martin Lawrence's Martin. That deflection is the pattern. He forgets where they first met, then leans on twelve-step language ('admitting is the first step'). He acknowledges his 'worst rep' with women, then jokes about perfecting their backstroke. He measures the relationship in holidays, Thanksgiving to Christmas, then floats 'church steps,' a wedding, before undercutting himself with 'have you ever asked your bitch for other bitches?'
The verse collapses into fatigue: 'I'm tired, you tired, Jesus wept.' It is a punchline and a white flag. The shortest verse in the Bible, deployed to end the longest verse on the album.
Why the sample matters
Using the Ponderosa Twins' 1971 refrain is not decorative. Doo-wop and early soul built an entire vocabulary around the idea that love is inevitable, ordained, bigger than the singer. Kanye's verses argue the opposite case (love is a negotiation, a compromise, a series of jokes to avoid saying the real thing) and then let the sample keep insisting he is bound to fall anyway. The old voices win the argument by simply refusing to stop.
Why it endures
Bound 2 divided listeners on release, partly because of its lurching structure and partly because the video became a meme. What has kept it in rotation is the honesty of its form: a man who cannot speak plainly about wanting one person, letting a group of teenagers from 1971 speak plainly for him. The Ponderosa Twins Plus One get a second life as the song's conscience.

"Bound (Kanye West - Bound 2)"
Bound to fall in love (Uh-huh, honey)
All them other niggas lame, and you know it now
When a real nigga hold you down, you supposed to drown
Bound
Bound to fall in love
Bound to fall in love (Uh-huh, honey)
What you doing in the club on a Thursday?
She say she only here for her girl birthday
They ordered champagne but still look thirsty
Rock Forever 21 but just turned thirty
I know I got a bad reputation
Walking 'round, always mad reputation
Leave a pretty girl sad reputation
Start a Fight Club, Brad reputation
I turned the nightclub out of the basement
I'll turn the plane 'round, your ass keep complaining
How you gon' be mad on vacation?
Dutty wining 'round all these Jamaicans
Uh, this that prom shit
This that what we do, don't tell your mom shit
This that red cup, all on the lawn shit
Got a fresh cut, straight out the salon, bitch
I know you're tired of loving, of loving
With nobody to love, nobody, nobody (Uh-huh, honey)
Close your eyes and let the word paint a thousand pictures
One good girl is worth a thousand bitches
Bound
Bound to fall in love
Bound to fall in love (Uh-huh, honey)
I wanna fuck you hard on the sink
After that, give you something to drink
Step back, can't get spunk on the mink
I mean damn, what would Jeromey Romey Romey Rome think?
Hey, you remember where we first met?
Okay, I don't remember where we first met
But hey, admitting is the first step
And hey, you know ain't nobody perfect
And I know, with the hoes I got the worst rep
But hey, their backstroke I'm tryna perfect
And hey, ayo, we made it, Thanksgiving
So hey, maybe we can make it to Christmas
She asked me what I wished for on my wishlist
Have you ever asked your bitch for other bitches?
Maybe we could still make it to the church steps
But first, you gon' remember how to forget
After all these long-ass verses
I'm tired, you tired, Jesus wept
I know you're tired of loving, of loving
With nobody to love, nobody, nobody
So just grab somebody, no leaving this party
With nobody to love, nobody, nobody (Uh-huh, honey)
Jerome's in the house, watch your mouth
Jerome's in the house, watch your mouth
Bound
Bound to fall in love
Bound to fall in love (Uh-huh, honey)
